How Tree Mugs are Made
|
TEXAS TREE MUGThese Texas-size, food and microwave safe stoneware mugs are sprouting in Carol Castro's studio! Carol presses clay into a real Texas tree to handbuild these giants.
They are about 5" high and hold 24 oz.! Glazed with rich Turkish amber outside and lead-free speckled vanilla dip inside, the mug has a generous handle with sprout for a thumb rest. Each mug is $16.00 (U.S.) plus shipping and handling. Allow six weeks for delivery. Mugs will vary as each is built one-at-a-time by hand. What a great gift this mug makes...especially with the special tag that shows Carol at work while Inspector Dog looks on! Mugs shipped in a box. |

BOWLSCereal bowls are perfect for breakfast or a special candy dish. Earthenware cereal bowls are from the Duncan line of molded products glazed in spectacular crystal colors.
Steep-sided, flat bottom rice and serving bowls are thrown on the potter's wheel and are microwaveable. Bowls can be personalized. Smaller sets of stacking bowls are called Salsa Dishes. Red is for salsa, blue for sour cream, and green is for guacamole. |
|
MUGS / CHALLISFunctional mugs are food safe, dishwasher and microwave safe. Retail price starts at $13.00 each.
Challises are also food safe and fun! The pair in this slideshow are about 9" high. Many challis designs can be created on the potter's wheel. |

PLATESBig, Plain, and Fancy - there's a plate for everyone! Plates are wheel thrown with a hand-carved foot.
The Cup and Plate set has a mug simple enough for everyday use, but paired with the cake-decorated saucer, it's an elegant way to serve coffee and cake. Plate diameters are 7 or 9 inches. There is also a 12 inch size that's thrown upside down on a "slump hump". The "Great Grapes" plate shown is only decorative and was a custom creation. The large Hot Plates are available on ETSY.com. |

TEAPOTS AND SETSTeapots are wheel-thrown with handbuilt spouts. All are food safe, but hand washing is recommended.
Through email, customers will choose a basic shape and handle design, as well as flowers and glaze color. Expect an email sketch of the pot prior to production. Single teapots shown here have won awards in local art shows. Singles retail from $25.00 while the 3-pc. tray and teapot set begins at $95.00. |

Big and Lidded VasesVases can have lids or no lids. They can be made with food safe glazes inside. They can be decorated with sprays of flowers or even hand-built cobblestones and leaves.
Like this Speckled Sunkist vase with red roses, a vase can be elevated on a hand-carved, fluted bottom. Small, medium and large vases range in size from 5 inches to 22" tall, and price from $25 to $225.00. The largest vases are coil built on the potter's wheel. |

Lid ReplacementCarol Castro can replace your broken lids!
Without a lid, a cookie jar, honey pot, casserole, candy dish or other valuable piece of ceramics can be useless! Some vessels are just to precious to throw away...so don't! Just send us an email or call to begin a conversation about your particular project. Sometimes the replacement is easy. Sometimes it is hard and requires doing a lot of math and measurements. But it's beautiful when we get it right. Satisfaction is guaranteed. |

CylindersCylinders are wheel thrown or hand-built. Texture, like fingernail scratches or stamped images, can be added to the wet clay. Cylinders vary in prize according to size from 4" high to tall 14" vessels.
Quilted clay cylinders feature red, buff, and white clay in textured patchwork with clear glaze. They are handbuilt and not safe for food due to crevices that form inside while being handbuilt. Lids can be made for cylinders. These are commonly called canisters. This pair was thrown and sculpted to match a customer's wallpaper. |
